Grandma Jane

Grandma Jane,

Today marks the one year anniversary of your home going to Heaven.  You sure are missed and even though I wish you were still here on earth, I know you are where you are meant to be.  You have seen Jesus!  You have stood in the glory of the throne of God!   You have walked on streets of gold and you have been reunited with your love, Grandpa Skip!

I am sure Grandpa's heart burst with joy and happiness when he saw you one year ago! I am sure he yelled out, "Jana, you are here!  Can you believe this place?!?!  This is what we were waiting for and why we put our hope and trust in God!"  I can't imagine your reunion, Grandma.  All the pain and sorrow of earth passed away!  You were healed both in body and mind.  Your memories once again  restored and your personality no longer tainted by Alzheimer's.

Grandma, I can just see you now.  I can see you walking around heaven stopping to talk to every one you pass saying, "I think I know you from somewhere." or "hello!"  You would have instantly made new friends. I can see you introducing Grandpa to person after person saying, "Skip, this is my new friend."

I am not sure what clothing is like in heaven, but Grandma, you would have the brightest, flashiest thing there is!  On earth you always "sparkled" and I am sure in heaven you have some type of bling but I can imagine this time, it is precious stones and jewels.

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him."  1 Corinthians 2:9

Grandma, how awesome it is that you have seen, you have heard the voice of our Lord and sung his praises and because your mind has been healed, you can conceive the greatness of what God has prepared for you, His faithful servant!

I love you, Grandma!  I miss you and I know you would love seeing our children grow and loving on our little girl.  I know it would thrill you to know we have a little girl to spoil and dress up!

Give Grandpa a hug for me!  Your legacy lives on and I am blessed to have had you as my Grandma!

Praise God for the hope we have in Jesus!

When your heart hearts for others

My heart hurts for some dear friends of ours.

Tomorrow, our friend, Ryan, goes in for his third brain surgery.  He has a malignant tumor and it has come back. Not the news they were hoping to hear after his bi-monthly MRI.  He had been symptom free and had stable MRI after stable MRI for almost three years.

"When I walk through deep waters
I know that You will be with me
When I'm standing in the fire
I will not be overcome
Through the valley of the shadow
I will not fear"

Ryan is our age.  He is a father of two boys and husband to his dear wife.  He is our friend and he loves Jesus!

My high school friend, Julie, just texted me that her breast cancer has now spread to her bones and lung.  My heart is aching!  Kent and I saw her at Thanksgiving and what a special time to spend with her, her husband and their two sweet boys.  Julie got her diagnoses last summer….right around her second sons first birthday.  Julie and I had babies really close together….her second and our third.  It hits really close to home.  Julie is my age, mother to two sweet little boys and a loving wife. She married her high school sweetheart and I actually went on my first ever date with my high school boyfriend with her and her husband back in 1997.

"I am not alone
I am not alone
You will go before me
You will never leave me"

Julie is a dear friend from home and she loves Jesus!
The blessing in all this is that both of our friends know where their hope lies.  They know it lies in Jesus alone!  I praise God for that!  What hope and peace we have in Him!

"In the midst of deep sorrow
I see Your light is breaking through
The dark of night will not overtake me
I am pressing into You
Lord, You fight my every battle
And I will not fear"

This is hard stuff!  I really don't know how to process such suffering.  It makes me look at life differently.  It inspires me to love on my kids more, to not sweat the small stuff and isn't most of life small stuff? It pushes me to be in His word reminding myself of His promises.  It reminds me that what truly matters is to love each other, encourage one another and point others to Jesus, the only way that we can spend eternity in heaven with God.

"You're my strength
You're my defender
You're my refuge in the storm
Through these trials
You've always been faithful
You bring healing to my soul"

Thank you Lord for fighting our every battle!

(Song by Kari Jobe.  It is an AMAZING song!  click here to watch.  Its basically been on repeat on Spotify the last couple of days.)

2 Corinthians 12:9

This verse has meant a lot to me in this season of life.  I often feel weak and tired in hard days  of raising children.  It is easy to try to control things or doubt my ability to be all and do all to the standard that I think I should.  I am so thankful that I have the Word of my God to lean on for strength and encouragement in the hard days.  Praise God that His power is made perfect in my weakness!

Leaving a Legacy: A Tribute to my Mission Minded Parents

My parents recently returned from a three week mission trip to the Philippines through Taylor University.  My mom is an education professor there and this was a J-term trip for education majors.  Even though it was a college course trip, it was also equally a missions trip.  This is the third time my mom has gone to the Philippines and the fourth time for my dad.  They have also gone on mission trips to several other countries:  Bolivia, El Salvador, Honduras, St. Croix, Ukraine, etc. etc. (I can't remember them all :)

Mission trips were not a big part of their lives when I was growing up.  I grew up hearing about a trip my dad took to Haiti when I was really young that left a lasting impact on him.  I could tell that his heart had been shaped by that experience and that it was definitely an "it had more of an impact on me than I had on them" type of experience.  Fast forward many years and my dad went to Honduras with our church every year and then my brother, Jody, started going and my mom went too. By this time I was out of the house so I never went with them.  Mission trips started to become the new normal and it wasn't unusual for my parents to take 2-3 a year.

As a child of missionaries, I have noticed that people don't always understand why they go or why they leave family to do what they do.  I am so thankful that God has given me wisdom in this area and this quote sums up my thoughts on it.

You see, I want them to go.  I want them to share the gospel with people who do not know.  I want them to be the hands of feet of Jesus…..and they are!

My dad posted several pictures on Facebook from their most recent trip to the Philippines.  Here are a few.

The children lining up to receive nutritious food.

My mom administering basic first aid to a naked toddler.

Kids playing in trash.

More first aid.

Wow!  Can you imagine?!?!  Can you imagine being in a place where naked children are running around? Can you imagine putting on latex gloves and treating peoples wounds?  Can you imagine pulling up your van filled with a nutritious mush type food and the children hear your van and come running?  Can you imagine serving up the food knowing that this is the only nutritious food these children will get today and maybe for a few days?  I can't imagine but my parents have seen it and I know their lives have been transformed.

As I look at this pictures, I am so proud of my parents.  I am so thankful that they have answered Jesus' call to go, serve and give.  They are not just OK to give of their resources.  They give of their time.  They go to the hard places, look poverty and despair in the eye and act.  This was a college sponsored trip yes, but they could have been OK just doing the college part of it and not going on the feedings and not applying first aid to injured and hurting children.  They give to the least of these and love them with the love of Jesus.  This does something to me.  It impacts me and moves me and is shaping me.  It is changing the way I view life and I can tell you one thing….I want to be just like them!

Unsettled

Do you every get an unsettled feeling in your soul?  I have had one recently that keeps creeping up.  It happens when I let myself read hard things or listen to hard podcasts and when I challenge myself with the Word.  I feel overwhelmed by what I am learning and uncertain how to process the information let alone proceed with it.  What I am talking about is poverty, need, dying children, unreached people groups, malnutrition, poor drinking water, etc.  My heart quickly becomes burdened and you know what?  I want it that way!  I want to be aware.  I do not want to live with my head in the sand.  Why not you might ask?  Because Jesus wouldn't want me to.  He wants me to go, give, pray, act!

So right now I am reading this.  It's not an easy read.  Very challenging to say the least.
Here is a quote from the book that stuck out to me.  Jen is referring to all the commands that God gives us to feed His sheep.  He is serious.  He means it and He tells us to do it….over and over!

This is another book that really shakes you up.  I have learned so much from David Platt recently.  I listen to his daily "Radical" podcasts.  David challenges us to live differently, view our possessions differently than our culture tells us to, and to do something about the world's poor, dying and unreached.  The world statistics are overwhelming to say the least!

I am not sure what my next steps are to be but I can tell you one thing….I don't want to live normal anymore.  I want to live radical.  I don't want to fit in, I want to look different.  I want Jesus to interrupt my life as many times as it takes!

"Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." Romans 12:2 (NLT)

Lord, please continue to change the way I think that I might bring glory to your name!

Hurry Home Grandma!

Grandma Jane,

The last couple of days have been emotionally up and down as we know your time here on earth is coming to an end.  Gone are the days of talking to you and hearing your voice and listening to your laugh.  You are in a comatose state as Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia slowly take over your body.

As I try to process your imminent passing from earth to Heaven, my heart and mind are full of mixed emotions.  I sometimes find myself wondering why this disease took you from us.  Even though you are here with us physically, you haven't been with us mentally for a long time.  I saw you on Christmas Eve and at that time, you would still look around the room and knew people had come to see you but your recognition of everyone was gone.  I am thankful for the time sitting next to you on your bed showing you pictures of our baby girl, your great granddaughter, Whitley.  I know you would have loved her and thought she was the greatest thing!

Grandma, the last couple of years Alzheimer's has defined who you were and dictated the way you acted and the way you processed your environment.  I want you to know that it will never be how I see you.  My prayer is that all of the memories I have of your last couple of years will be blocked out as I focus and remember you for who you are to me.

Grandma, you are love!  Words of love were not your strong suit but actions of love and giving of your time were.  You hosted wonderful holiday events in your home giving of yourself to serve and love on us through hospitality.  You and Grandpa took the time out of your schedule to come to EVERY sporting event I was probably ever in (and there were a lot of them)!  What amazing memories to think of you both being there to cheer me on!

Grandma, you are a prayer warrior!  Of all the things I desire to be here on earth, I want to be like you in this way.  I remember you telling me all the time that you prayed for me and asked God to, "wrap his hedges of protection around me."  Thank you, Grandma!  Thank you for setting this example for me and not only do it but tell me you were doing it.  Such comfort in knowing I was prayed over all those years!

Grandma, you are funny!  You made quite the impression on my college friends every time you came to visit.  You always wanted to be in everyones business and know all about who was dating who and why so and so was single.  I remember one Valentine's day you sent me a card and it said, "Happy Valentine's Day!  I hope you get a lot of kisses!"

Grandma, you LOVED my grandpa!  In one of the last conversations I had with you while your mind was still functioning at a high level or normalcy, you told me how you and grandpa still sleep in the same bed and cuddle!  What a picture of lifelong love and intimacy!  I could tell that you were proud of that because you pointed out that by your age, a lot of your friends sleep in separate beds.

Grandma, you love Jesus!  I have vivid memories of your pink Bible and the devotional book, "Our Daily Bread" sitting out in your house.  I know that you were in the Word and it was a necessity to you  not just something you brought to church with you every Sunday.

Grandma, Alzheimer's disease forced me to say goodbye to who you were a long time ago and soon, I will say goodbye to you as you leave us here on earth.  The best part is this…I am not saying goodbye to you but rather, "See you later!"  You were always sharply dressed with lots of costume jewelry, big earrings, gold purses and such.  I can't wait to see what you look like in heaven!  I can hear grandpa now as he sees you for the first time when you are reunited, " Jana (not sure why he called you this but it must have been your pet name) what took you so long?! I have been waiting to show you God's glory and His majesty and Jesus sitting at His right hand."  One thing I know for sure is this, Grandma. You will quickly become friends and make yourself known to everyone.  That was your nature here on earth so I am sure it will be the same in heaven.  You never met a stranger!  I think you knew almost the whole town of Marion or at least you liked to think you did.

So I leave you with this, Grandma Jane.  Hurry home!  Jesus and Grandpa Skip are waiting with open arms for you.  I can only imagine what it will be like when your body and mind are renewed and perfected!  Praise God for the Hope we have in Jesus!

Our Kiddos at 4 months

I thought it would be fun to see what each kiddo looked like at 4 months old.  I think you will agree with me that Josh is the odd man out :)

More "I Get To Be The One"

These are not easy days....I am tired and with little opportunity to truly rest, I am trying to focus on everything that I have to be thankful for.  I am thankful that I am a mama to these three precious little ones.  I am thankful that I get to stay home and raise them and spend precious moments with them.  Don't get me wrong, all moments are not precious :) but here are some  highlights from the last couple of days that melt my heart and make me so very thankful that I get to be the one for our three kids.

Josh giving Whitley crawling lessons :)

Will enjoying his first Icee from 7-eleven.

Josh headed into McDonalds for our lunch date wearing his new Colts outfit...helmet and all.

Josh watching the dirt waiting for his pumpkin seed to grow....5 minutes after he planted it.

Whitley "talking" to me.

Will hiding God's word in his heart... and Whitley screaming in the background.

I Get To Be The One

I am loving the song, "I Get To Be The One" by JJ Heller right now.  The words truly touch my heart and bring me to a place of calm in the midst of the hard days in this hard season.

Here are the lyrics.  You can also watch the You Tube video above.

"I Get To Be The One"
Well hello,
Little baby.
Your eyes have never seen the sun
You should know
Little baby
That I am the lucky one

I get to be the one to hold your hand
I get to be the one.
Through birthdays and broken bones
I'll be there to watch you grow
I get to be the one.

Don't feel alone now,
Little baby.
Do you hear me singing you a song
I can't wait to show you
Little baby
How to crawl
How to walk
And how to run

I get to be the one to hold your hand
I get to be the one.
Through birthdays and broken bones
I'll be there to watch you grow
I get to be the one.

How does someone so small
Hold my heart so tightly
I don't even know you
I love you completely

I get to be the one to hold your hand
I get to be the one.
Through birthdays and broken bones
I'll be there to watch you grow
I get to be the one to hold your hand
I get to be the one.
Through birthdays and broken bones
I'll be there to watch you grow
I get to be the one.

Great Song!

I am really loving this song by the Sidewalk Prophets, "Help Me Find It."  You can listen to it on You Tube by clicking here.

I love how it talks both about taking the next step and about needing to be still.  I so often get antsy and want things to change on my timeline when in actuality, there is a time to take the next step and a time to be still and wait.  Waiting is so very hard but He will give us peace for each moment and if we call out to Him, He will help us find his perfect will for the situation and lead us and guide us both in our waiting and when we step out in faith.

I love these lyrics....

"If there’s a road I should walk
Help me find it
If I need to be still
Give me peace for the moment
Whatever Your will
Whatever Your will
Can you help me find it
Can you help me find it

I’m giving You fear and You give faith
I giving you doubt
You give me grace
For every step I’ve never been alone

Even when it hurts, You’ll have Your way
Even in the valley I will say
With every breath
You’ve never let me go"

Thoughts on Motherhood

I didn't write this but thought it was pretty great and a good reminder to focus on what really matters.  I hope it encourages you like it encouraged me.

I shall not judge my house, my kid’s summer activities or my crafting skills by Pinterest’s standards.

I shall not measure what I’ve accomplished today by the loads of unfolded laundry but by the assurance of deep love I’ve tickled into my kids

I shall say “yes” to blanket forts and see past the chaos to the memories we’re building.

I shall surprise my kids with trips to get ice cream when they’re already in their pajamas.

I shall not compare myself to other mothers, but find my identity in the God who trusted me with these kids in the first place.

I shall remember that a messy house at peace is better than an immaculate house tied up in knots.

I shall play music loudly and teach my kids the joy of wildly uncoordinated dance.

I shall remind myself that perfect is simply a street sign at the intersection of impossible and frustration in Never Never land.

I shall embrace the fact that in becoming a mom I traded perfect for a house full of real.

I shall promise to love this body that bore these three children – out loud, especially in front of my daughter.

I shall give my other mother friends the gift of guilt-free friendship.

I shall do my best to admit to my people my “unfine” moments.

I shall say “sorry” when sorry is necessary.

I pray God I shall never be too proud, angry or stubborn to ask for my children’s forgiveness.

I shall make space in my grown up world for goofball moments with my kids.

I shall love their father and make sure they know I love him.

I shall model kind words – to kids and grown-ups alike.

I shall not be intimidated by the inside of my minivan – this season of chip bags, goldfish crackers and discarded socks too shall pass.

I shall always make time to encourage new moms.

I shall not resent that last call for kisses and cups of water but remember instead that when I blink they’ll all be in college.
~ with love from one tired mother to another.

Love this!  Such a great reminder!

So much to be thankful for!

My heart is full of thankfulness today for many reasons.  Life often goes so fast that it is easy to not stop and give thanks to God for all that He has done, is doing and will do in the future.  I thought I would share a little of what I am thankful for today.

*  Good MRI results for our dear friend Ryan.  He continues to take chemotherapy for a brain tumor and is monitored regularly for changes.  Such a praise!

*  News of some of our friends expecting a new little one!  Huge praise!

*  Coming back from a girls weekend refreshed and completely blessed by the common bond we have through common life circumstances but most importantly, through Christ.

*  A husband who took care of the boys while I was gone and did a great job.

*  My parents making it to Korea safely and having the ability to talk to them while they are there.

*  Feeling our baby girl move and kick all throughout the day.  We are 23 weeks tomorrow!

I am blessed and praise God for these things and more.

A Slow Goodbye

Jane and Skip Pearson, August 2009

Two years ago on Christmas day, we said goodbye to our beloved Grandpa Skip.  He was diagnosed with cancer right before Thanksgiving and quickly went downhill.  It was a very fast, very sad goodbye and it was so hard because he seemed to be in good health one week then the next was getting horrible news that he had cancer all throughout his body and there really wasn't any hope.

At about the same time as Grandpa's death, I feel that we also started to say goodbye to my beloved Grandma Jane. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about three or so years ago.  The day of  Grandpa's funeral was obviously a difficult one but it was hard in many ways.  We had the funeral and then went in the limo to the graveside for the service.  It was a cold January day in Indiana and grandma got out of the limo, walked over and sat down where she was supposed to sit next to the casket and then once it finished up, quickly got up to leave.  There was no visible emotion on her face and she was very matter of fact about getting back into the limo and out of the cold.  It wasn't the type of response you would expect from a new widow who had been married to my Grandpa for so many years.  It was hard to understand but I quickly realized it wasn't her....it was the disease.  I realized that mourning looks completely different for someone struggling with Alzheimer's.

Grandma soon moved into an assisted living facility and currently has her own apartment.  She eats all of her meals there and participates in the various activities and has overall done well there.  It was hard selling the Pearson family home so quickly after Grandpa's passing but it had to be done.  There was no way Grandma could live there on her own.

My Grandma Jane is an exceptional woman.  She was known by my college friends as "Grandma Jane" and they all knew and loved her.  They loved how she would pry in their business asking about boys and dating all the time.  That was her focus....who was dating and why so and so didn't have a boyfriend.

Grandma successfully raised four fantastic children teaching them what hard work looked like and how to give your best and not quit.  She was a real go getter and really pushed her kids to perfection.  She and my grandpa put God first and stressed the importance of strong moral character.

Grandma was the life of the party.  She was often loud and involved in multiple conversations at the same time.  She loved to have a good time, talk to her friends on the phone, entertain, keep house and dress in loud, sequined covered clothes and loud earrings.   She would often laugh so hard over something that she would wet her pants :)  She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest!

Today is a hard day.  I am writing this to process through my thoughts and emotions.  I found out today that my mom and her siblings have been informed that Grandma has to move out of her current assisted living facility and into a specialized Alzheimer's facility.  We knew this day would come.  We have known for several month now.  My grandma had done so well and had seemed to really plateau with the disease (if that is possible).  All of the changed a while back when grandma took off from her facility on foot for the first time.....so far she hasn't done it again.  That was a big deal and not a good sign at all.  She walked down a busy street in my hometown about 3 miles until someone recognized her and picked her up.  She didn't know where she was going and really couldn't recall what had happened after she was brought home....this isn't her...its the disease.

This is a sad disease because it truly is a slow goodbye.  Gone are the days of sitting in church with Grandma and getting embarrassed because she is talking to the person next to her a little too loud.  Gone are the days when she wants to know all about things and pries into your business.  Now she is quiet and sits there with a blank look on her face....its not her....its the disease.  One of the saddest parts for me is that her laughter is gone.  No more laughing fits where she might wet herself.

It's also hard because she was the proudest Grandma and Great Grandma and I don't even know if she knows that we are expecting baby #3.  I could have told her in person when I was there over Thanksgiving but I just couldn't bring myself to because I didn't want to see the confusion that might be on her face.  I want to remember the joy on her face when she heard the news at the same time as my parents when we announced that Will, our first born, was on the way.  It was at her house, my mother's childhood home at Christmas time.  Such a special memory that I will always treasure.  I want to remember her holding Josh in the below picture knowing that in that picture she completely knew and understood what was going on.

I really love the picture at the top of this post of she and my Grandpa.  That picture was taken at my cousin, Keith's wedding.  I love how it captures Grandma's smile.  I so miss those days.

Alzheimer's is a hard, sad, slow, disease.  There is no cure.  It will just get worse and then one day, it will take my Grandma home to Heaven to be with Grandpa Skip and most importantly God Himself.  I long for that day for her.  I desire for the day when her mind will be made whole again and she will once again be full of life and laughter.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

I am so thankful that God is right with my Grandma now and will be with her every step of the way until He heals her when she leaves this life and enters into Heaven.

I am so very thankful for the HOPE we have in Christ!

Photoshop Elements

I have had the computer program Photoshop Elements for about two years.  I have tried a couple of times to work with it but have gotten overwhelmed each time.  I still have a long ways to go but I finally had some time last week to sit down and work on learning how to add text to a picture.  Thanks to a handy tutorial I found online, I was able to finally make something!

I love this quote because it is such a good reminder to pay attention because the days pass by so quickly!  I also am a fan of Jen Hatmaker.

Super Mom vs. Abiding Mom

I found this on Pinterest and the original source can be found here at a blog called, "Confessions of a Homeschooler.'

This has been on my fridge for a while but I really haven't looked at it too closely until today.  I was walking by and noticed the last one that says, "Super Mom: She chooses quantity of activities vs. Abiding Mom:  She chooses the most excellent way."  This has been the desire of my heart recently and this just confirms it.  I don't want a quantity of activities in my life, I want what is best in my life.  I don't want to be busy for busy sake.  Yes, that makes the days pass more quickly and sometimes, that is a welcome thought but again...it makes the days pass too quickly....my babies are growing up so quickly...I don't need extra busyness to make it go even faster.  I want to be content enough to slow down, watch my boys grow, and cherish the moments along the way.

I hope the above comparison challenges and inspires you.
