Oklahoma State Park Day Trip

We enjoyed a fun day exploring 3 of the many state parks Oklahoma has to offer.  Our first stop was Alabaster Caverns State Park where we went underground in a pretty impressive cave. It was a guided tour and we saw lots of bats (yuck!), many types of crystals and experienced complete darkness when the tour guide turned off the lights.  It was a fun and educational experience and hard to believe this huge cave is in the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma.

Our next stop was Little Sahara State Park.

This one wasn't as exciting as the first stop but they had a nice observation deck where the kids could look out over the sand dunes and see the dune buggies racing around.  Oklahoma has such a diverse landscape.  I never knew there were large sand dunes in the north western part of the state.

Our third stop was Gloss Mountain State Park.

This was a short hike up the "mountain" but the kids enjoyed racing up to the top.  The view was pretty neat considering how flat Oklahoma is everywhere else.  We stayed up at the top for a few minutes then headed down. It is a little nerve-wracking to be up high with young kids who don't like to listen when you tell them to not get any closer to the edge!  Josh enjoyed collecting the natural gypsum laying around and I was just thankful that I saw the "beware of rattlesnakes" sign as we were leaving not when we first got there :)
