My dad was recently here and he mentioned that he misses the way my Grandma (his mother in law) used to laugh. I told him that I really couldn't remember that and that we really need to get out some old video tapes and watch some of our old memories to remind ourselves of the grandpa's who have passed away and of my grandma who now has Alzeimer's.
I can't really remember her laugh but I remember this which to me means more...
I remember her telling me over and over that she prays for me. I remember her telling me that she prays hedges of protection over me. I remember her saying that she prays against the Devil and for angels to protect me.
Those words stuck with me and they mean a lot to me because I know that she was't just saying it, she was doing it. I want to be like that. I want to be a woman of prayer. Not because it is the cool thing to do or because it makes me look good or feel good but because it works! I want to leave a legacy of prayer for my family like my Grandma has left for me. Some people make lots of money and leave it to their children/grandchildren, some people discover things and invent things and the world recognizes them for those accomplishments but some people pray hedges of protection over their children and grandchildren and then tell them they did it. What a priceless gift! If I were to choose, I would choose the years of prayers prayed over me.
Another thought on prayer that I wanted to share. Last fall I went home to Indiana and while I was at church, a dear friend of my grandparents (Marilyn for those who know her) came up to me and told me that she has been praying for me since my Grandpa Skip passed away in December 2010. She told me that she knew that he always prayed for me so she wanted to take over doing it since he passed away. Her words really touched me. Prayer is the most valuable thing we can do. She doesn't have to pray for me but she is choosing to because she knew enough about my Grandpa to know that he prayed for me.
I am so thankful that my Grandpa Skip and my Grandma Jane left a legacy of prayer for me. It is my goal to walk in their footsteps.
